Victor Prevost (1820-1881) was born in France and studied art before moving to California in 1847 and to New York in 1850. On a visit back to France in 1853, he learned Gustave Le Gray's calotype process, which was based on the process developed by William Henry Fox Talbot and employed sensitized waxed paper to make photographic negatives.
