Rough draughts of surveys, begun A.D. 1778 ; 126
Date inferred by cataloger. In erased pencil on recto: "No. 126 2[nd]". Military fortification map. Covers the southern half of Verplanck’s Point in the town of Cortlandt, New York. Appears to show barracks--compare Rice and Brown. American Campaigns of Rochambeau’s Army. Princeton: 1972, v. 2, pl. 146; also compare pencil annotations on the engraved map entitled "Plan of Stoney and Verplanks Points and of the works of the British Army at that post...." Map also shows stream now Lake Meahach. Oriented with north to bottom of sheet. Pen-and-ink, pencil on laid paper. Soiled and abraded. Mounted on cloth, bound and cropped, disbound and silked by subsequent owners. Cleaned after removal of backings 1999; some fill remains. Sheathed in mylar. Title from separate index sheet filed at head of series. This entry was transcribed by Heusser and is still legible under longwave ultraviolet light. Statement of responsibility, series title and series numbering also from index. Title number from map recto is the work of a later editor--Simeon DeWitt or his assign--subsequent to 1820. Text "Belonging to 126" on map verso may be contemporaneous with the map drawing. Watermark: "J WHATMAN". References: Heusser, Albert H. George Washington’s map maker, p. 249-256.
