Original printed and signed application addressed to David Holmes, governor of the Mississippi Territory, and accompanying manuscript exemplification addressed to President James Madison seeking federal aid for construction of the Erie Canal; both are dated 8 Oct. 1811 and signed by Canal Commissioners Gouverneur Morris, DeWitt Clinton, Simeon DeWitt, William North, Thomas Eddy, Robert R. Livingston, and Robert Fulton. Included are engravings of full length portraits of Morris, Clinton, Livingston, and Fulton.
