John Peter Zenger was a printer and journalist who produced a newspaper, the New-York Weekly Journal, that was critical of the colonial governor of New York, William Cosby. Cosby accused Zenger of libel and Zenger was tried and acquitted in 1735. His acquittal is considered an important step toward freedom of the press in North America.
