Inscribed at upper left in graphite: 'Curtis's Cocoa nut Grove / Campbells book store in distance / in the principal street the House / is entirely hidden by the dense foliage'; at upper right: 'Cocoa & Lime Trees / This sketch is very / characteristic of the Island'; at lower left: 'Provost Marshalls Guard'.

Depicts the Union capture of Roanoke Island, North Carolina on February 8, 1862.
