The New-York Historical Society holdings is well advanced, and scholars can quickly learn what is in store for them in their research. Our lists of 10,000 volumes of newspapers are being revised, as well as all our other library holdings. This work, so often mentioned in past reports as being so important to accomplish, is at last under way with sufficient space available to carry it on. The increase of our collections in all departments is constant, and many important acquisitions were secured by gift and purchase in 1939. Our publicity was much more extensive than ever before, and the attendance four times as large. The opening of the building on Sundays and holidays added greatly to the attendance figures. The work of the W.P.A. Field Activity Program, with the help of the Department of Education, which conducts to the Society's museum thousands of children from the public schools for their history lessons, is an important feature in the use of our material. Many groups have been conducted through'the building, some on general tours and others in highly specialized studies of our collections and building. Many items of equipment were purchased during the year, such as a small printing machine for printing labels and posters, an enlarging machine for the photographic department, which produces pictures in any size up to 40 x 50 inches; plan files of ten drawers each for the Map and Print Room, which take maps up to 4x6 feet lying flat; additional typewriters and tables and completely new equipment of tables, chairs, and bookshelves for the Reading Room. For the building much was acquired, as is shown by the report of the Superintendent. The lovely garden on the 76th Street side of our building was completed in time for our June musicale and strawberry festival. Its beautiful pool with Mrs. Huntington's bronze "Diana of the Chase," its flower beds, and trees add a distinctive note to the Society's home, and contribute to the enjoyment of its members and friends.
