88 The New - York Historical Society In the summer of 1944, Mr. E. Victor Loew of Tuxedo Park, New York—the author of the 1900 invitation quoted above—filled that lack by presenting to the Society the Mail Coach "Lightning." In his letter of September 21st last, acknowledging President Zabriskie's thanks for this handsome gift, Mr. Loew writes: It is a very noted coach, and I will give you a little of its history.— The coach was built for the late Mr. T. Suffern Tailer of N. Y. City, from specifications he obtained (from the Royal Post Office in London, England) of a very noted Mail Coach called "Mercury." Until Mr. Tailer built the "Lightning" in 1892, the "Mercury" was the fastest coach in the annals of coaching history, and it was Mr. Tailer's ambition to break all coaching records, which he did on July 12th, 1892.... Mr. Tailer presented the coach to me in 1927 and I won the Koch Memorial Cup with it, for the champion road team of America at The National Horse Show in November, 1930. As the Historical Society has Mr. Fahnestock's "Park Drag" and The Coaching Club's Road Coach "Pioneer," I felt that the Society should have my Mail Coach, to complete the collection. The time table of the coaching trip made by the late T. Suffern Tailer, July 12,1892 with the Mail Coach "Lightning" from Paris to Trouville, 140 miles, in 10 hours, 40 minutes, using 14 teams' of horses, being 56 horses in all, follows: Paris St. Germain Vaux Mantes Bonnieres Pacy-sur-Eure Evreux La Commenderie Riviere Thibouville Folville des Quatre Routes .
