Ambrose E. Burnside (May 23, 1824-September 13, 1881) was a Major-General in the American Civil War. He assembled the 1st Rhode Island Infantry, which played an initial and instrumental role in the Federal Army's attempts to protect Washington D.C. Later, he became commander of the Army of the Potomac- but after taking severe losses at the Battle of Fredericksburg, he was relieved of that command. He retained several other posts as commander for the duration of the war. After the war, he served as a United States Senator from Rhode Island.
