Benjamin Franklin Butler (5 Nov. 1818-11 Jan. 1893) Elected to the Massachusetts state senate in 1858 and served as a delegate to the Democratic convention in Charleston in 1860. Butler served as a general in the Massachusetts state militia prior to the Civil War and was appointed brigadier commanding general of the Massachusetts militia by the Governor when the War began. In April 1862, Butler captured and controlled New Orleans, Louisiana until being recalled by President Lincoln in December of 1862. After the Civil War, Butler was elected from Essex County to the House of Representatives in November 1866 and reelected in 1868. He was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 1880 as a Democrat.
