Stereograph: Interior view of Fort Sumter, with General Hampton and Bishop Lynch standing next to Columbiad gun., Wade Hampton (March 28, 1818-April 11, 1902) Cavalry leader in the Confederate Army who ultimately attained the rank of Lieutenant General. Organized and equipped Hampton's Legion, a unit consisting of companies of infantry, cavalry, and artillery. After the Civil War, Hampton served as Governor of South Carolina from 1876 to 1879, U.S. Senator for South Carolina from 1879 to 1891, and a U.S. Railroad Commissioner from 1893 to 1897.
