Organized and equipped Hampton's Legion, a unit consisting of companies of infantry, cavalry, and artillery. After the Civil War, Hampton served as Governor of South Carolina from 1876 to 1879, U.S. Senator for South Carolina from 1879 to 1891, and a U.S. Railroad Commissioner from 1893 to 1897.
