James Birdseye McPherson (14 Nov. 1828-22 July 1864) Graduated from West Point in 1853. Officer in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War who ultimately attained the rank of brigadier general. McPherson played a prominent role in Grant's operations against Vicksburg, culminating with its capture on 4 July 1863. He succeeded Sherman as commander of the Army of the Tennessee.
