Engraved for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, February 28-March 7, 1865, (XIX: 493): 385; also in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Famous Leaders and Battle Scenes of the Civil War (New York: Mrs. Frank Leslie; 1896), pg. 464, completely redrawn by a skilled artist or the engraver, with a vignette view of the verso image of the oar and gaff hook used as impromptu flagpole. The Confederacy never surrendered Fort Sumter, but Sherman's advance through South Carolina finally forced the Confederates to evacuate Charleston on February 17, 1865 and abandon Fort Sumter. This scene occurred the following day.
