Inscription: Graphite on paper. 6 5/8 x 9 7/8 in. At center: 'Escape of Private OHaver of 20th Co H Indiana Regt. / from the Rebels to the Monticello after killing / a Rebel Captain--and the drowning of his / comrade / (from a sketch given our artist by Mr Ohaver) / Co H Indiana Regt.'
O'Haver was a soldier in the 20th Indiana Infantry Regiment, Company H. About the Artist: William T. Crane was a 'special artist' for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. General Quincy A. Gilmore relied heavily on his sketches of confederate fortifications to inform the Federal War Department of the recent events.
