NEWSPAPERS AND PERIODICALS The greatest pride of acquisition comes to any library with the arrival of a unique item, and we are indebted to the Virginia State Library for sending us from its files two such pieces, Loyalist New York newspapers of the late months of the Revolution, of which no other copies are known. They are the issues of The New-York Morning Post for July 29, 1783, and The Royal American Gazette, listed below. The issue of the Poughkeepsie Journal given by the Virginia Historical Society is one of only two known copies. Many gaps in our files of New York and other newspapers have been filled in this year, by both gift and purchase, and we list a few below. Mention should be made of two titles obtained in microfilm reproduction—the New Brunswick, N. J. Brunswick Gazette and Weekly Monitor, 1786-1792, and the Boston Liberator, 1831-1839, through The James B. Wilbur Fund. An unusual number of almanacs have been received, many wanted periodicals, and a few amateur periodicals have come in through the continuing thoughtfulness of Mr. Beecher Ogden. Among almanacs added this year are Poor Roger, 1773. The American Country Almanack, for the Year . . . 1773. By Roger Hore (New York: Samuel Inslee and Anthony Car, [1772]). Abbott Fund. Hutchins' Improved: Being an Almanack for ... 1772 (New York: Hugh Gaine, [1771]). Abbott Fund. Rivington's New Almanack, and Ephemeris . . . for . . . 1774.
