38 The New-York Historical Society Townsend's Transatlantic and Coastwise Steamship Funnel Marks ...[New York: 1874]. Through the half century since the tragic burning of the General Slocum in the East River, several items relating to the disaster have been left with us, and a few months ago came another gift, this time from the son of Captain Samuel H. Berg of the United States Life Saving Corps who aided in the rescue work. The Captain's small scrapbook and papers and clippings, together with a halftone print and some thirty photographs of the scene, have been added to our other records by Mr. Herbert M. Berg. Our extensive collection of negatives of New York City transportation facilities was augmented by Mr. Alfred Seibel's gift of ten photographs of elevated railways, by a framed photograph of the Signing of Contracts for Dual System of Rapid Transit, the gift of Mr. Cyrus C. Miller, and by a photograph of the Third Avenue Elevated Railroad looking north from 9th Street, purchased through the Wilbur Fund. Dr. De Witt M. Lockman added two photographs of the wedding of General Tom Thumb to our valuable albums of pictures of the popular midget. The record of man's gustatory interests as revealed in the collection of menus reported last year has been augmented by menus and seating lists of ambassadorial dinners, 1931-1939, the gift of the Estate of the Hon. Lady Lindsay; by another group for special dinners, the gift of Mrs. Charles W. Bryan, Jr.; and by purchase of nineteenth-century items through the Wilbur Fund. And among several little publications listing the street cries of the city is now one which pushes the date of a contemporary record back to 1809, considerably earlier than any previously acquired. BOOKS AND PAMPHLETS The story of such happy cumulations could go on, but we shall forego the details of interesting connection, to name briefly a few other recent accessions—first, some books and pamphlets of peculiar concern to the City or State of New York, in certain cases primarily because of place and date of imprint:
