Family and Background have remained there until they moved to New York State in 1790, because Jesse "Eames" is listed as still living in East Sudbury Town in the first Federal Census of Massachusetts, 1790.86 The story is told of Captain Jesse and of a friend, Captain Isaac Russel of Sherborn, Massachusetts, that after Burgoyne's surrender and as they marched homeward through Staatsburg, New York, in charge of some prisoners, "they were so charmed with the country that they decided to remove to it after the war."86 However, Burgoyne surrendered on October 17, 1777™ eight months after Captain Jesse resigned, and no record has been found to show that he rejoined the army. A different reason for Captain Jesse's move to Staatsburg is given in the account by the anonymous compiler of the unpublished record of the Ames or Emes family. This authority states, darkly, that Captain Jesse removed with his family to Staatsburg "from some freak of obstinacy."88 As a matter of fact and for whatever reason, the two captains each bought property on the Hudson River near the village of Staatsburg just above Hyde Park. The transcripts of a mortgage and three deeds on file in the Office of the County Clerk of Dutchess County, Poughkeepsie, New York, are the sources for the history of their land investments.39 Their property was part of the land once owned by Gertrude Coeymans, nee Staats,40 who sold it to Christian Bergh, from whom it passed to his son John Bergh, and then to Charles Shaw. On August 28, 1790, Charles Shaw and Nicholas Hoffman "of the City of New York Merchants," and Nicholas De Peyster and Miles Sherbrooke, "of the City of New York Gentlemen," sold 65 acres of this property as Lot 1, and 130 acres as Lot 2, to Jesse Emes "of the County of Dutchess, Farmer," for 500 pounds. Then, on April 20, 1791, Charles Shaw and "three others" sold to Isaac Russel, 162 acres of property adjoining that of Jesse Emes for 325 pounds.41 85 U. S. Dept.
