"From the Windows of the Mail Coach" vessels which are continuously to be seen plying backwards & forwards. Upwards of 2000 sail, of which from 10 to 50 tons, are exclusively employed on this river in removing the produce from the interior to the City & supply the inland population with necessaries. The city of Albany at which we arrived on the morning of the 4 July ,1811 is beautifully situated on the southern declivity of the hills on the East [sic] side of the river. It is chiefly built of brick and contains about 7000 inhabitants. The Capitol, in which the representatives of the State Legislature meet, is a modern & handsome building. There is a dome in the centre of the building on the top of which is erected a statue representing the Emblem of Justice, a very appropriate one certainly for the first court in the country, but the sculptor, whether from ignorance or with the view of imploring the goddess to lean more towards his country, has represented the balances in her left hand preponderating towards her self and the sword in her right in such a position as if she was resolved to maintain that preponderance. Gregories or the Federal Inn is a very comfortable one.
