y6 The New-York Historical Society Cams of the Map and Print Room. With her rare multi-lingual ability, Mrs. Cams made it possible for us to broadcast no less than three times for the Voice of America in French and in German. The little autos and the Stuyvesant family were the subject of these interviews. We were delighted to have the skill of Mrs. Cams to allow the Society to aid our Government in bringing knowledge of American cultural life and, we hope, greater understanding of the United States to the people of Europe. Special thanks of this department are also due Mr. Gene Fallon of WNYC, who twice weekly on his morning program, "Around New York," mentions Society activities. Early in the year Miss McMahon was heard broadcasting over WNYC on the story of the Historical Society. Completing our television activities for the year, The Today Show used Society materials for a Winter Scenes segment on December 22d and our Saint Nicholas material for a Christmas morning broadcast. The show is broadcast, nationwide, in the hours when surveys show that the television audience is the greatest. Two press previews were staged this year, the first in the spring for the opening of "Stuyvesant Family Portraits" exhibition, at which the food, drink and decor were traditionally Dutch; the second, for the opening of "America in Daguerreotypes," was held in the fall under the capable direction of Miss Scoon. Other activities undertaken by this department included attending a seminar, "Public Relations in a Changing America," held in January at New York University, which was an interesting source of new ideas, and writing an article for the January Quarterly concerning the Society's celebration of the Bicentennial of Lafayette's Birth. A constant stream of queries for information and photos from members of The Fourth Estate keeps a typical day far from being routine. One never knows what new challenge will come from the phone each time it rings. This is what keeps fife busy and interesting in the Public Relations Department. Susan D.
