Letter from Joel M. Jansen, a musician in company C, 141st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, describes Erastus Haskell's condition and life at Camp Casey, Washington D.C. Erastus continues the letter to his father, discussing his health and situation while at the camp.
Joel M. Jansen, a private in Company C, 141st New York Infantry, enlisted at age 19 in Elmira, NY. He was appointed musician on September 11, 1862, and promoted to principal musician on January 1, 1865. Born in 1843 as Joel M. Janson, he worked as a farmer before joining the Union Army.
