Two-page deposition of Dr. John Archer of Annarundel [Anne Arundel] County [Maryland], describing circumstances surrounding the death of Jos, a slave belonging to Mr. James Lee. Archer testifies that an autopsy of the victim showed cause of death to be consistent with an accidental head injury at the hand of his master, Lee, despite Jos's complaints of "a pain in the side." The Bernard Gotfryd Photograph Collection spans the period from 1960-2008 and primarily contains portraits of prominent people and photographs of New York City, as well as material related to Gotfryd's career as a photographer and author. Portraits include a large number of artists and literary figures as well as actors, businessmen, musicians, and politicians. Subjects include buildings, street scenes, and transportation, as well as celebrations, demonstrations and protests, funerals and other newsworthy events.

Prisoner: 'This will do me more good than that darkie.'

One-page letter from Reverend John Jasper of Richmond [Virginia] to Reverend Richard Raine, pastor of M. E. church, Philadelphia, in response to an inquiry regarding knowledge of a man named Robert Paine, possibly Bishop Robert Paine, Methodist Episcopal Bishop (1799-1882).

Four-page letter to a judge regarding the unidentified author's views on permitting African Americans to serve in the military without first giving legal freedom.

Three-page letter marked 'Confidential' to Lysander Spooner of Boston [Massachusetts] requesting his participation in an Executive Committee formed to advocate for the enlistment of Blacks to fight in the Civil War. Signed by George L. Stearns on behalf of the Committee.

Includes consideration of a proposal from George G. Heye of the Museum of the American Indian for an exchange or loan of native American artifacts (Jarvis collection); decline of request from a woman, Christine Maura, to act in opposition to the lynching of Black Americans (African-Americans) in the United States; and resolution to place signs in the library to prevent loud talking.

Petition denying support for the American Colonization Society, signed by William Wilberforce and 12 others in London, 1833.

First prisoner: 'Whats the matter.' Second prisoner: 'Why the Sentinel gave a Reb ten dollars to get some change for some tobacco, about two hours ago and he forgot to come back.' Guard: 'Don't you all know dat's wrong, dat's no way to treat a man, if I had known dat when he was here, I would have kill'd him on the spot.'
