: [Letter from Samuel Vernon to Mr. Henry Marchant]; Letter from Samuel Vernon [of Newport, Rhode Island] to Mr. Henry Marchant, promising repayment of ten dollars that Marchant gave on loan to Mr. [John] Bent to settle an account with Wm. Dauers [Duer].

: [Letter to Mr. John Anderson]; One leaf with manuscript on both sides. On front, letter to Mr. John Anderson of Bristol regarding international slave trade, market prices of 'young & likely' negros, and clothing for slaves being shipped. Includes mention of Brig Alert and Ship Hector, carrying slaves from the Coast of Africa to Barbados. Letter signed 'F. H. V E', Charleston [South Carolina]. On verso, letter dated May 8, 1784 to Messrs. : [Manifest of the Steamer Powhatan]; Ship manifest of "negroes, mulattoes, and persons of color taken on" the Steamer Powhatan of Washington from the port of Alexandria [Virginia]. Includes names of ship's Master J. Rogers, owner Thomas Javins, and collector Saul Stough. Lists 12 slaves.

: [Letter from A. J. Rux to E. H. Stokes]; Two-page letter from A. J. Rux in Spring Hill, Alabama, to E. H. Stokes [of Richmond Virginia], reporting on the poor slave trade market and his intentions to move to McKinley, Alabama, to try to sell slaves.

: No. 11, Remarks; Remarks given [probably by Samuel or William Vernon] regarding a case against Captain Thomas Rogers, who is accused of producing falsified trade books and trading to his own benefit in Barbados, Cape de Verdes, St. Christopher, and Isle de Los. Document describes several instances of disregard for trade orders from the ship's owners.

: Sales of slaves [aboard] Brig Marian, Captain George Lawton, from Africa; Two-page account of "negro sales" taken from the Brig Marian, Captained by George Lawton from Africa. Includes names of purchasers, number of slaves purchased, and total cost. Many slaves listed as "dead."

: [Letter from Thos. Rogers to Messrs. Samuel & William Vernon]; Letter from Thomas Rogers at Monsarado Road [possibly Barbados] to William and Samuel Vernon of Newport, Rhode Island.

: [Memorandum regarding the sale of a slave and her child to Mrs. Elsworth]; Two-page memorandum regarding the sale of a "negro wench and child sold at publick vendue [sic], to Mrs. Elsworth for eight pound." Includes list of 3 "articles" outlining the terms of sale set forth by executor William Elsworth. Signed by witnesses Jeremiah Elsworth and William Wallace [?].

: Inventory and appraisement of the Estate of Homer Virgil Milton deceased; Four-page inventory of Homer Virgil Milton [probably of Jefferson County, Georgia]. Includes names and estimated value of aprroximately 32 slaves, among other household goods. Signed on last page by appraisers Samuel Clements, Robert Lowry, Tom Rim [?], and "Mark T." Made official and signed by Sherrod Arrington.

Roberts by George Wooley of the slave girl named Ann, on the ground that the negro slave is unsound and diseased, in Fayette County, Kentucky [previous contract attached].

: [Letter from Willard Briggs]; Letter requesting insurance for the Brig Hannah, embarking on a voyage to Africa, the West Indies, and back to Rhode Island against 'the dangers of the sea, insurrections of the slaves, and a war against all or every nation, pirates plunders, etc.' Signed Willard Briggs of Newport, November 1793.

: Bill of Sale between Samuel Hocker and Joyphenia Tarkington; Four-page bill of sale between Samuel Hocker and Joyphenia Tarkington, including the slaves David, Robert, Lucinda, Mariah, George, Caleb, and Mary, in Lincoln County, Kentucky.

: [Bill of lading for the Brig Royal Charlotte]; Bill of lading for the Brig Royal Charlotte, owned by Saml. & Wm. Vernon, Thos. Teakle Taylor and Wm. Tayler [Taylor], departing from Newport harbor [Rhode Island] to the Coast of Africa carrying rum, sugar, wine, tobacco, pork, beef, and hogshead. Two copies, signed by William Taylor.

: Deed of trust between Tilman Hocker and Jesse Hocker; Four-page deed of trust between Tilman Hocker and his son Jesse Hocker establishing Jesse Hocker as the trustee of the property of Tilman Hocker, including three slaves, on the occasion of the marriage of Tilman Hocker's daughter, Mary Settles, to Benjamin Settles, in Lincoln County, Kentucky.

: [Letter from S. & Wm. Vernon to Capt. George D. Sweet]; Letter from Samuel and William Vernon of Newport [Rhode Island] to Captain George D. Sweet on the Brig Othello.

: No. 10, Remarks; Remarks given [probably by Samuel or William Vernon] regarding a case against Captain Thomas Rogers, who is accused of producing falsified trade books and trading to his own benefit in Barbados, Cape de Verdes, St. Christopher, and Isle de Los. Includes copy of inventory of goods provided Rogers by the owners of the ship, as well as a list of goods found to be deficient. Note at right, "Remarks to be make aware of in y'e [the] action for breach of orders."

: Bill of Sale between C. W. Hall and David Payne; Two-page bill of sale between C. W. Hall and David Payne regarding one slave boy named Pleasant and one slave boy named Edmond, in Lexington, Kentucky.

: Declaration of Covenant by Perry Gaugh against C. W. Nuckols; Declaration of Covenant by Perry Gaugh against C. W. Nuckols regarding the prior sale of Martha Ann, a slave woman sold by Nuckols to Gaugh with the assurance of having sound mind and body. Martha Ann fell ill and died soon thereafter, resulting in this lawsuit for $600. Includes attached original Bill of Sale. In Lincoln County, Kentucky.

: [Report of valuation on the estate of Francis M. Hunt]; Two-page evaluation of the estate of Francis M. Hunt, prepared by appointed commissioners to determine the value and interest of his property, including "a negro slave named Willis worth $1,000." Signed by commissioners N. G. Tevis, Roy Stewart, and John S. Murphy. Note on back reads, "N. B. Collin, Guardian on Petition."
