Followed by a second letter dated August 22, 1775, from Mairez and Cooper [to the Vernons] regarding their accounts current.

Russell to Stephen Dublois, Esq.]; Two-page letter from Nathaniel Russell in Charleston [South Carolina] to Stephen Dublois, merchant in Newport, Rhode Island, continuing discussion of late payments to Dublois. Russell cites delayed profit from Captain [Nathaniel?] Shearman's 'cargo of negros.'

: [Receipt for 5 gallons of rum from George Shore]; Receipt for 5 gallons of rum purchased by Captain George Sweet [probably on the Brig Othello] from George Shore. Includes note, "Rec'd at same time [as] the above from Francis Mairez & David Cooper [of Jamaica]"

: Bill of Sale of between William Stevenson and David Dickson; Two-page bill of sale between William Stevenson and David Dickson regarding one slave man named Bob, in Harrison County, Kentucky.

: [Letter from Samuel Vernon to Mr. Henry Marchant]; Letter from Samuel Vernon [of Newport, Rhode Island] to Mr. Henry Marchant, promising repayment of ten dollars that Marchant gave on loan to Mr. [John] Bent to settle an account with Wm. Dauers [Duer].

: Invoice of the Cargo on board the brig't Othello George Sweet Master for the Coast of Africa on Account and resque of S & Wm. Vernon and goes consigned to s'd Master; Inventory of goods consigned to Captain George D. Sweet aboard the Brig Othello, owned by Samuel and William Vernon of Newport, Rhode Island, departing Rhode Island to the Coast of Africa. Includes instructions that read, "To insurance in London, from thence to Affrica [Africa] at and from thence to market with slaves at 8 guineas." On back, "Invoice of slops [?] sent on board," such as frocks, hats, shoes, and rum.

On front, letter to Mr. John Anderson of Bristol regarding international slave trade, market prices of 'young & likely' negros, and clothing for slaves being shipped. Includes mention of Brig Alert and Ship Hector, carrying slaves from the Coast of Africa to Barbados. Letter signed 'F. H. V E', Charleston [South Carolina]. On verso, letter dated May 8, 1784 to Messrs. Lycott and Maxwell of Barbados regarding communication between Captain William Lewellin of the Ship Hector and Mr. John Anderson of Bristol on January 20, 1784. Signed 'S. Ca' [Charleston, South Carolina]. Also on verso, letter fragment signed 'F. H. V E.'

: [Letter from A. J. Rux to E. H. Stokes]; Two-page letter from A. J. Rux in Spring Hill, Alabama, to E. H. Stokes [of Richmond Virginia], reporting on the poor slave trade market and his intentions to move to McKinley, Alabama, to try to sell slaves.

: Sales of slaves [aboard] Brig Marian, Captain George Lawton, from Africa; Two-page account of "negro sales" taken from the Brig Marian, Captained by George Lawton from Africa. Includes names of purchasers, number of slaves purchased, and total cost. Many slaves listed as "dead."

: [Bill from B. Cocke, Junior, to Robert Cary]; Bill from Bowler Cocke, Jr., to Robert Cary of London, for remittance of payment to Richard Adams [of Virginia]. On back, directions from Richard Adams to pay directly to Samuel and William Vernon & Co.

: Resolves relating to Slavery & the Slave Trade & the admission of new States into the Union.; Resolution produced by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that the United States Congress must abolish slavery in the District of Columbia. Includes note that the "resolves were passed by the House in the 21st, & by the Senate of the 23 March" and that the resolutions are the same that are referred to in the letters of E. Jackson and R. C. Winthrop.

: [Letter from Thos. Rogers to Messrs. Samuel & William Vernon]; Letter from Thomas Rogers at Monsarado Road [possibly Barbados] to William and Samuel Vernon of Newport, Rhode Island.

: [Memorandum regarding the sale of a slave and her child to Mrs. Elsworth]; Two-page memorandum regarding the sale of a "negro wench and child sold at publick vendue [sic], to Mrs. Elsworth for eight pound." Includes list of 3 "articles" outlining the terms of sale set forth by executor William Elsworth. Signed by witnesses Jeremiah Elsworth and William Wallace [?].

: Inventory and appraisement of the Estate of Homer Virgil Milton deceased; Four-page inventory of Homer Virgil Milton [probably of Jefferson County, Georgia]. Includes names and estimated value of aprroximately 32 slaves, among other household goods. Signed on last page by appraisers Samuel Clements, Robert Lowry, Tom Rim [?], and "Mark T." Made official and signed by Sherrod Arrington.

: [Letter from Sam Brown to William Vernon, Esq.]; Manuscript copy of a letter dated November 26, 1794, from Sam Brown of Boston [Massachusetts] to William Vernon of Newport [Rhode Island]. Followed by letter dated March 1794.

: Petition by George Wooley against A. O. Roberts; Two-page petition by George Wooley against A. O. Roberts requesting a recision of a previous contract regarding the purchase from A. O. Roberts by George Wooley of the slave girl named Ann, on the ground that the negro slave is unsound and diseased, in Fayette County, Kentucky [previous contract attached].

: [Receipt of maintenance fees for a slave named Dina at Bridewell Almshouse]; Receipt of payment to an almshouse for maintenance fees for Dina "a slave in Bridewell" [probably the New York City Almshouse] from owner Rich Thurman [?] to Superintendant Mr. Jones.

: [Advertisement for Mathew Carey's testimony of the Colonization Society]; Two-page printed advertisement by Mathew Carey of Philadelphia, promoting this written testimony on the Colonization Society and its activities in Liberia.

: [Letter from Sam Brown to William Vernon, Esq.]; Letter from Sam Brown of Boston [Massachusetts] to William Vernon of Newport [Rhode Island]. Includes manuscript copy of letter from Silvester Jones to Sam Brown received March 10, 1792.

: [Request for advanced wages for Samuel Scranton to be paid to Sarah Jones]; Request for advanced wages for Samuel Scranton to be paid to Sarah Jones by Samuel and William Vernon in Newport, Rhode Island. In turn, Scranton promises to contine work aboard the Othello until the debt is settled.

: Acct. of Gold rec'd & Paid; Unsigned and undated account record for the trade of gold.

: [Letter from John Parrish to William Dilwyn]; Four-page letter from John Parrish of Philadelphia to William Dilwyn regarding the American Antislavery movement. Includes mention of several slaveholders who manumitted their own slaves, as well as several Quakers involved in the abolition of slavery.

: [Letter from Thos. Taylor to Messrs. Wm. Vernon & Company]; Letter from Thomas Teakle Taylor in Accomack, Virginia, to William Vernon [of Newport, Rhode Island].

: Affidavit of Nathan H. Gartin; Two-page affidavit allowing Nathan H. Gartin to seek and arrest the slave Jack in Marion County, Kentucky.

: Daniel Trougeon to John Duncan; Receipt for wages paid to Daniel Trougeon [Trudgeon] by Captain John Duncan of the Brig Othello. Includes deduction from wages for 10 gallons rum "taken up from 5 July to Feb'y 19th." On back, note dated March 21, 1771 verifying receipt of payment signed by Boyle Vandeleure of Barbados.

: Mr. Charles Yates to Messrs. Mercer & Clements; Receipt for medical services by Doctors Clements and Mercer to Charles Yates for "new negroes" [probably from the Brig Othello]. Includes itemized list of remedies.

: [Bill of sale for a slave named Cato]; Bill of sale for "a negro carpenter named Cato," purcahsed by Mr. [John] Joyce [of Kingston, Jamaica] from H. Earl.

: [Letter from Willard Briggs]; Letter requesting insurance for the Brig Hannah, embarking on a voyage to Africa, the West Indies, and back to Rhode Island against 'the dangers of the sea, insurrections of the slaves, and a war against all or every nation, pirates plunders, etc.' Signed Willard Briggs of Newport, November 1793.

: List of 108 names to petition for use of Faneuil Hall; Signed petition of 108 names for the use of Feneuil Hall [Boston, Massachusetts] in January 1839 for a gathering [probably for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society].

: [Deed of Emancipation of Charles by Mary Stevenson]; Two-page deed of manumission and emancipation of the slave boy named Charles by his master Mary Stevenson in Harrison County, Kentucky.

: Invoice of Cargo Ship'd on the Charlotte for Cadiz; Account current by Richard Adams [of Virginia] to Samuel and William Vernon [of Newport, Rhode Island] for provisions supplied to the Brig Royal Charlotte, bound for Cadiz [Spain].

: Accts. Of Adv'ce for y'e People of Brig Othello; Statement of the accounts of [First?] Mate William Munro and Second Mate John Bent of the Brig Othello. Lists payments in cash and goods.

: [Bill of lading for the Brig Royal Charlotte]; Bill of lading for the Brig Royal Charlotte, owned by Saml. & Wm. Vernon, Thos. Teakle Taylor and Wm. Tayler [Taylor], departing from Newport harbor [Rhode Island] to the Coast of Africa carrying rum, sugar, wine, tobacco, pork, beef, and hogshead. Two copies, signed by William Taylor.

On top, a contract signed by Dudley Saltonstall promising to "carry to North American for sale" a "negroe girl named Mimba." On bottom, a reciept for the sale of the slave Mimba dated June 4, 1763. On back, verification of sums received by Dudley Saltonstall. Signed by John Joy of New London [Connecticut] and dated October 13, 1763.
