Manuscripts Relating to Slavery

: Copy of a letter sent Pr. The Othello, Cap'n Sweet; Manuscript copy of letter from Francis Mairez and David Cooper of Montego Bay, Jamaica, [to Samuel and William Vernon], sent via Captain George Sweet on the Brig Othello, regarding profits from slaves sold on the Vernon's behalf and other trade business. Followed by a second letter dated August 22, 1775, from Mairez and Cooper [to the Vernons] regarding their accounts current.

: Invoice of the Cargo on board the brig't Othello George Sweet Master for the Coast of Africa on Account and resque of S & Wm. Vernon and goes consigned to s'd Master; Inventory of goods consigned to Captain George D. Sweet aboard the Brig Othello, owned by Samuel and William Vernon of Newport, Rhode Island, departing Rhode Island to the Coast of Africa. Includes instructions that read, "To insurance in London, from thence to Affrica [Africa] at and from thence to market with slaves at 8 guineas." On back, "Invoice of slops [?] sent on board," such as frocks, hats, shoes, and rum.

: [Request for advanced wages for Samuel Scranton to be paid to Sarah Jones]; Request for advanced wages for Samuel Scranton to be paid to Sarah Jones by Samuel and William Vernon in Newport, Rhode Island. In turn, Scranton promises to contine work aboard the Othello until the debt is settled.

: Daniel Trougeon to John Duncan; Receipt for wages paid to Daniel Trougeon [Trudgeon] by Captain John Duncan of the Brig Othello. Includes deduction from wages for 10 gallons rum "taken up from 5 July to Feb'y 19th." On back, note dated March 21, 1771 verifying receipt of payment signed by Boyle Vandeleure of Barbados.

: Mr. Charles Yates to Messrs. Mercer & Clements; Receipt for medical services by Doctors Clements and Mercer to Charles Yates for "new negroes" [probably from the Brig Othello]. Includes itemized list of remedies.

: Brigg Othello Portage Bill for Her Voyage to Africa; Portage bill for the Brig Othello, listing crew names, wages, and term of employment on a passage to the coast of Africa. Notes four men, George Harvey, Michael Keable, John Chace, and Ezekiel Mitchell [Mitchel] that "left the vessel at Virginia." On back, additional detail about wage payments to crew members.

: Messrs. Samuel & William Vernon; Account record by John Thornton & Co. in Fredericksburg, Virginia, for expenses related to the sale of 52 slaves aboard the Brig Othello, captained by John Duncan, and cargo aboard the Schooner Susanna, captained by Obed Butler.

: William Purchase to Messrs. Samuel and Wm. Vernon; Bill to Francis Mairez and David Cooper [of Jamaica] for services and provisions provided by William Purchase to Samuel & William Vernon [probably for the Brig Othello], including rum, tobacco, and Ticklenburgh.

: Memo relating charges; Unsigned letter with no addressee regarding charges from Captain [Thomas] Rogers [possibly on the Brig Othello] for wood, canoe hire, corn, and water. The author writes that, "if you possibly can imagine this to be a reasonable charge, pray allow it to him - but it is more than double we were ever charg'd by those that brought off twice the number of slaves."

: Dav'd Cooper Credits in part of the Othello Cargo; Account record of credits to David Cooper [possibly in Montego Bay] for the sale of "negroes" to be taken aboard "in part of the Othelo [Othello] Cargo." Includes names of purchasers, and the percentage of credit given by Cooper.
